Invitation to NSA Seminar on preventive measures in relation to MARPOL violations

Over the last years, Port States have intensified the control of ships and significantly increased the sanctions for violations of MARPOL with respect to discharges of oil and oily water.

In the US, the authorities have strengthened MARPOL’s enforcement and criminal fines up to 27 mill USD have been awarded. Similar developments in Europe are expected.

In order to give an update on the recent developments and to outline preventive measures, the Norwegian Shipowners Association, in co-operation with INTERTANKO, is inviting members and other interested parties to a seminar on:

Wednesday 2 June 2004, 10:00 - 14:00
at NSA, Rådhusgaten 25, Oslo

Details of the programme have not yet been finalised, but it aims to cover inter alia the following subjects:

  • The regulatory framework of MARPOL
  • Typical deficiencies as observed by the Port State Control
  • Recent developments in enforcement in the United States
  • Experience and corrective actions by a shipping company
  • The views from the perspective of the P&I Clubs
  • Oil Record Book entries

The target group for the seminar is senior management, in particular from the technical and legal department.

For registration, please notify Margrethe G. Kinn by email to, preferably by Friday, 28 May 2004.
