Well-attended INTERTANKO Tanker Seminar at Turkish Chamber of Shipping in Istanbul

A well-attended INTERTANKO Tanker Seminar was arranged with the support of local member Dunya Denizcilik and in co-operation with the Turkish Chamber of Shipping in Istanbul on 31 May 2004. A great number of local member companies and other shipping interests participated in the tanker seminar. The Turkish government was represented by the Undersecretary for Maritime Affairs, Mr. Ismet Yilmaz, and the Deputy Undersecretary, Dr. Bekir Sitki Ustaoglu. The Chairman of the Turkish Chamber of Shipping in Istanbul, Mr. Metin Kalkavan, and INTERTANKO Council Member, Mr. Suay Umut, hosted the event which took place at the Chamber of Shipping building.

The main speaker of the day, INTERTANKO’s MD Peter Swift, gave a presentation covering INTERTANKO today, the tanker industry – performance and structure, issues and challenges, managing the issues, and finally challenges ahead.

Capt. Tuncay Cehreli, Manager of the Turkish Straits Vessel Traffic Service, gave a very good overview of the development of the Istanbul VTS system.

Both the above presentations can be downloaded from the INTERTANKO web site.

Mr. Metin Kalkavan thanked Dr. Swift for his presentation and said he appreciated the good working relationship that had developed between INTERTANKO and the Chamber and also pointed to the very constructive attitude the Turkish government had taken to maritime issues. He said there were clearly areas of common concern between the two associations and that dialogue would be important particularly in relation to EU matters and port state control issues where the concerns were very similar.

The Undersecretary, Mr. Ismet Yilmaz, thanked the Chamber and INTERTANKO for arranging the seminar. Mr. Yilmaz also provided an overview of the Turkish Government’s current priorities with regard to maritime affairs and said that the Government was keen to co-operate with industry wherever possible.
