Proposal for new single hull rules for Japanese ports not finally adopted

There have been press reports to the effect that Japan will not permit entry into Japanese ports of single-hull tankers after 2010. We understand that the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport (MLIT) has made such a suggestion, but no final decision has yet been reached.

We are advised that this issue is under consideration by a committee established by MLIT, and that some members of the committee have voiced their strong opposition to the proposal. A clarification is expected in early July.
