INTERTANKO MD opens IMPA Conference, emphasising the raising of the industry's profile and of its standards

The annual conference for the International Marine Purchasing Association (IMPA) was held earlier this week at KensingtonTown Hall in London. This event has become the annual gathering for the marine purchasing community. This year, INTERTANKO's Managing Director, Dr. Peter Swift, was invited to open the ceremony and talk about the efforts of IMPA and INTERTANKO in raising the profile of maritime industry.

IMPA Chairman, Mr. Archie Caldwell, opened the conference, noting the continued support within the maritime sector for the event. It then fell to Dr. Swift to expand on the role of the two associations in enhancing the maritime industry's presence outside the maritime world. This effort would involve further work with regulators and politicians alike, ensuring that the significant role that the a maritime industry plays in people's everyday lives is fully understood.

Dr. Swift used the Chain of Responsibility concept to explain the significance of the involvement of IMPA's members in raising the standards of the industry through the enhancement of the competence and integrity of the individuals in the chain.

A question and answer session revealed that delegates were also conscious that any improved standards would come at a cost. Dr. Swift commented that you cannot sacrifice quality for cost and that the tanker sector continues to build on this premise.
