POINTS OF VIEW

A significant step in the promotion of the shipping industry has been taken with the launch of a new website - one put together by the industry itself. Shippingfacts.com provides basic facts about shipping and its contribution to world trade and the global economy, as well as information on the safety and environmental performance of ships and on the regulations affecting them.

The information is aimed at anyone with an interest in shipping but no specialist knowledge or involvement (inter alia - regulators, journalists, students, schools) as well as at shipping specialists looking for general information.

This site will also be an integral part of any reaction made by the shipping industry in response to future shipping casualties, providing a ready source of useful, pertinent information to provide context and background to current events.

Companies in the general shipping and ship operation sectors are encouraged to add a hyperlink to www.shippingfacts.com from their own website to increase the viability of this venture.

Reaction to the new website has been positive. Those wishing that there was even more information will not be disappointed. This is just a starting point, bringing together non-controversial input from right across the Round Table of international shipping associations - BIMCO, INTERCARGO, ICS/ISF and INTERTANKO. Now that this first step has been taken, it will not be difficult to add on whatever material people are looking for, allowing the site to evolve to meet the demands of its users.
