Come to Athens for the INTERTANKO Tanker Event 10-13 April 2005

Sponsored by ABS, DNV and Germanischer Lloyd

Surfing high on record rates due to high demand from India and China and a world economy that finally lifted itself from a prolonged period of zero growth, most tanker owners enjoyed unprecedented returns last year. 2005 has started on a more restrained note, especially in the larger tanker sectors, where an overhang of tonnage created nervousness in the market. As demand picked up, so did freight rates and the availability of tonnage seems to be working to owners’ advantage again.

Volatility appears to remain the name of the game in a year that will see a massive growth in tanker tonnage, changes in oil supply and consumption patterns and entry into force of MARPOL’s accelerated phase-out schedule for single hull tankers. Middle East production continues to power demand for long-haul transportation while output from Venezuela, Nigeria, North Atlantic and the U.S. Gulf has been more difficult to predict. At the same time concern is being voiced over the expanding U.S. trade and budget deficits, which are contributing to a slide in the value of the U.S. dollar and could threaten to disrupt current growth in the world economy and global trade.

The Athens Tanker Event 2005 will provide delegates with analyses and updates on the world economy, and on the energy, finance and tanker markets. Industry experts will share their views and forecasts and assist business leaders and executives in building sound foundations for future decisions. The programme will also include sessions focusing on technical and operational matters that will have an effect on the industry, such as the Joint Tanker Project from the International Association of Classification Societies (IACS), the Tanker Management Self Assessment programme (TSMA), as well as an update on the regulatory framework with emphasis on European and environmental issues. A separate session has also been dedicated to the growing volume and importance of derivatives trading in the tanker markets.

Incorporating the INTERTANKO Annual General Meeting as well as Executive Committee and Council meetings, the Athens Tanker Event 2005 will offer an outstanding opportunity to network and dialogue with leading figures in the worldwide tanker community.
