Compliance with Annex VI for all ship operators – deadline of 19 May 2005 only 2 months and 15 days away

When MARPOL Annex VI (Regulations for the prevention of air pollution from ships) enters into force on 19 May 2005, all fuels sold to ships need to be in full compliance. However, only in Singapore have clear, compliant guidelines and procedures for bunkering transfers been developed. But even if the ports do not have the relevant procedures in place, all ship operators will be expected to comply with the limits on emissions.

INTERTANKO has produced a new guide ‘A Guide to Bunkering of Ships for the purposes of Annex VI to MARPOL’ to assist ship operators indeveloping one onboard procedure for taking delivery of bunkers in order to ensure that ships do not deviate from the specific requirements of MARPOL Annex VI.

The Guide outlines how owners may take preventive action and avoid liability should the bunkers delivered to the ship be outside the specification and cause damage, or place the ship in a dangerous position in restricted navigable waters.
