Athens Tanker Event – record attendance

INTERTANKO's Athens Tanker Event this week attracted a record attendance of over 560 people in all. Tanker owners worldwide sent senior representatives and principals to the Association's Executive Committee and Council meetings and to three days of conference sessions where 45 speakers in eight separate sessions stimulated active discussion on subjects ranging from the Joint Tanker Project to the tanker and oil markets; from the human element to media perceptions; from regulatory and environmental issues to the global drivers behind change; from derivatives to LNG.

A great number of local members and associate members sent people to some or all of the event, and we were joined by local politicians including the Minister of Tourism and representatives from Greece's Minister of Merchant Marine, by students from the maritime departments of local universities, by Greek academics of global renown, which offered our members plenty of local contact.

Social events included 350 people at an informal dinner in the modern waterfront Kitchen Bar, stylishly decorated with hundreds of blue and silver balloons by NASDAQ, who was sponsoring the dinner. The following night more than 400 attended the Association's Annual Dinner in Megaron, the Athens Concert Hall, where a cocktail reception sponsored by Clarksons was followed by dinner sponsored by ABS in the huge ultra-modern circular hall where members and their guests were addressed by Greece's Minister of Tourism Dimitris Avramopoulos and by well-known academic and philosopher Costa Carras.

The next Tanker Event will be in spring 2006 in Singapore. Be there!
