Deadline 16 days away for compliance with Annex VI by all ship operators

When MARPOL Annex VI to MARPOL (Regulation for the prevention of air pollution from ships) enters into force in 16 days’ time, all fuels sold to ships need to be in full compliance with it. So far, only Singapore has developed clear, compliant guidelines and procedures for bunkering. But even if the ports do not have the relevant procedures in place, ALL ship operators will be expected to comply with the limits on emissions.

INTERTANKO has produced a guide ‘A Guide to Bunkering of Ships for the purposes of Annex VI to MARPOL’ to assist ship operators indeveloping one onboard procedure for taking delivery of bunkers in order to ensure that ships do not deviate from the specific requirements of MARPOL Annex VI.

The Guide outlines how owners may take preventive action and avoid liability should the bunkers delivered to the ship be outside the specification and cause damage, or place the ship in a dangerous position in restricted navigable waters.

INTERTANKO recommends that members consider placing at least one copy onboard each ship so that crews become familiar with their rights and obligations to document compliance with MARPOL Annex VI requirements.
