Guiding Principles to Emergency Management and Crisis Communications

INTERTANKO believes that it is essential that the industry responds quickly and effectively to an industry incident, not only to minimise risks to human life and damage to the environment, but also to ensure that all necessary steps are taken to protect the industry’s public image. These guiding principles have been produced to help the international shipping industry contribute to this objective.
This publication is intended to provide useful advice on why it is important to be prepared and what happens if you are not prepared. It includes a case study, for training purposes, in the form of a CD-ROM, on the needs and effects of incident management and media response plans, using the Sea Empress incident as an example.

A Guide for correct entries in the Oil Record Book - Part 1 (Machinery Space Operation)
INTERTANKO's Safety, Technical and Environmental Committee (ISTEC) has developed a Guide for correct entries in the Oil Record Book - Part 1 (Machinery space operation) to address the increasing problems of ships being detained and fined (particularly in the U.S.) due to equipment malfunction, and also to aid management of oil-water separators in the engine room.
The Guide contains instructions and interpretations on how properly to record all related operations as per MARPOL 73/78, Annex I, Regulation 20; a list of operations to be recorded; frequently found errors or mistakes; and detailed examples for all related operations.
The Guide is available in printed format and is structured to facilitate integration in the document management system of any individual INTERTANKO member on board and in the office. It can also be used as a training tool for seafarers.

A Guide to Crude Oil Washing and Cargo Heating Criteria
This Guide supplies operational information designed to assist the command of crude oil tankers and the operations departments of tanker companies. The Guide explains the IMO's recent amendments to Section 9 of the Crude Oil Washing (COW) Manual and supplies additional background information regarding the interpretation of these amendments.
The Guide also discusses the generalised layout of the COW system and methods used for this procedure on board a tanker and supplies ideas that will assist in the modification of procedures to minimise sludge build-up in tankers. In so doing a suggested heating criterion for various types of crude oils for COW and effective discharge is also discussed.
