Report from the Associate Members Committee

The Associate Members Committee (AMC) held its third and last meeting for 2005 on 29 September 2005 in Greenwich, Connecticut. INTERTANKO would again like to thank Charles R. Weber Co. Inc. and our AMC member and host, Basil G. Mavroleon, for providing an excellent venue and most generous hospitality.

Besides the follow-up on ongoing issues, the Committee would like to provide some preliminary information to the membership on highlighting the importance and awareness of "industry training". It is felt that the complexity of the tanker industry, and the ever growing need to create value to clients in the widest possible sense, calls for continuing focus on expertise among all stakeholders. The growing need for competency in the field of LNG transport is a particularly important element.

The AMC, representing 9 different business environments, viz. Agents, Shipbrokers, Class, P&I insurance, Marine Response, Oil Companies, Shipbuilders, Ports and Flag, feels that the professional training of staff, and the awareness of the benefits that this can bring, needs to be continuously highlighted as a key component in the value chain.

The Committee’s thinking is still at an early stage and more work remains to be undertaken before AMC can identify whether there are any initiatives that need developing that would benefit INTERTANKO’s membership. Due care will be taken to adapt the AMC initiative to other relevant industry efforts.
