~*~ Seasons Greetings ~*~

It has been a busy year for us all at INTERTANKO as well as for our members and associate members around the world. We have been active on many fronts – at the IMO, in Europe, in the United States, in Asia - including but not limited to environmental and technical, class, insurance, compensation funds.

The Association’s Council has finalised a new mission and vision statement for the members and for the secretariat. They will provide leadership to the tanker industry in serving the world with safe, environmentally sound and efficient seaborne transportation of oil, gas and chemical products. The vision is of a responsible, sustainable, respected tanker industry, committed to continuous improvement and constructively influencing its future.

And as a specific goal, its members will lead the continuous improvement of the Tanker Industry’s performance in striving to achieve the goals of zero fatalities, zero pollution and zero detentions.

Next spring will see our annual Tanker Event in Singapore March 29-31. This will include the Poseidon Challenge, which is an invitation to all participants in the Chain of Responsibility to join INTERTANKO members in a sustained commitment to continuous improvement. Based on the principle that the industry’s goals can best be achieved by voluntary, cooperative and self-motivated efforts, the Challenge stresses the importance of cooperation and emphasises that every link in the Chain is vital and must perform to the same high standard for society’s goals to be achieved, and to move our industry forward to be the best it can be.

Key figures from different sectors in the Chain are being invited to Singapore to discuss how they will each improve and lift their game and work together to achieve their goals. It would really be wonderful to have a strong representation in Singapore from members and associate members. For the Poseidon Challenge to deliver the benefits owners seek and need, we as principals and members’ representatives must personally support it by being present and demonstrating our own commitment to continuous improvement.

We thank everyone for their seasonal greetings and best wishes. We are not sending out greetings cards this year, but have instead made a donation to the Mission for Seafarers.

There will be no Weekly NEWS next week and INTERTANKO’s offices will be closed. However secretariat telephones will be forwarded to mobile phones.

We wish all our members a happy holiday season and a prosperous New Year with buoyant markets.
