Changing of the Guard at the International Chamber of Shipping

Spyros Polemis (recently retired INTERTANKO Executive Committee member) has been elected Chairman of the International Chamber of Shipping (ICS) and President of the International Shipping Federation (ISF) at their respective AGMs, held this week in Washington, DC. Polemis replaces Rolf Westfal-Larsen who has served in these capacities for the past eight years. Other changes include the election of Patrick Decavele (INTERTANKO Vice-Chairman) as Vice-President, ISF.

INTERTANKO Chairman Stephen Van Dyck sent a message of congratulations to Polemis in which he praised his rare mix of technical knowledge and knowing how to get things done in this politicised world, and said he looked forward to continuing their strong relationship at meetings of the Round Table.

In his message to Westfal-Larsen, Van Dyck praised his outstanding contribution to the industry and his expertise and thoughtful leadership. He noted how Westfal-Larsen’s combination of considerable talent with great modesty had resulted in his accomplishing much during his tenure, as well as making for pleasant relationships with all those he came across.

The appointment of Tony Mason to succeed Chris Horrocks as Secretary General of ICS and ISF was also announced at the meetings. Mason is ex Director for Corporate Strategy of P&O Nedlloyd. His principal work experience has been in the liner businesses in the European Union (EU) and Australasia-Pacific. His appointment will be from June with a handover from Chris expected to be completed by end September.
