Tour pour la Mer – nearly 300 shipping industry cyclists set off in great style

Tour Pour la Mer 2006 saw around 300 cyclists set off this Friday morning from the Cutty Sark in Greenwich and from Chatham’s Historic Dockyard to ride to Dover. This is the biggest maritime-related charity event ever, with the aim of raising £250,000 for the Mission to Seafarers and the Sea Alarm Foundation.

There is still time to sponsor an individual or a team – INTERTANKO and INTERCARGO are sending eight people. INTERTANKO’s Environment Manager Tim Wilkins is one of the event organisers and is cycling with the super-fit super-fast organiser’s team. The rest of the INTERTANKO/INTERCARGO team consists of Howard Snaith, Sally Woulfe, Joe Zhou and Bill Box, joined by Caroline Holt (Roger Holt’s daughter) from Informa – no less fit, or course, than the organisers’ team, but just cycling at a slower pace.

Sponsorship is possible on line via either or alternatively

INTERTANKO Managing Director Peter Swift (who came straight back from his travels onto his bicycle) and INTERCARGO Secretary General Roger Holt (whose enthusiasm in the rugby scrum should see him a front runner down Dover’s Esplanade) are part of the Knights of the Round Table team alongside ICS Secretary General Chris Horrocks (never known to be beaten by a steep problem) and BIMCO Secretary General Carsten Melchiors (whose attention to detail should see the team well prepared and properly documented).

The cyclists come from all sectors of the shipping industry – owners and managers, lawyers and brokers, insurance men and association men will pedal 80 miles to Dover and then will be taken in coaches across the Channel to Le Touquet. On Saturday they will ride another 45 miles in France just in case Friday’s ride was not enough.

Then a drinks reception and a celebration dinner hosted by the Mayor of Le Touquet and return to London on the Sunday (by coach!).

INTERTANKO is grateful to those Council members who supported the event at the Singapore meeting, and also to all those companies and individuals who have generously supported the INTERTANKO/INTERCARGO riders with individual donations.
