EMSA opening ceremony held at new Lisbon HQ

Since April 2006, the European Maritime Safety Agency (EMSA) has been operating from its permanent home town in Lisbon. This week the Agency held its opening ceremony at its new headquarters.

Welcoming the guests, Willem de Ruiter, EMSA´s Executive Director, said that the setting up of the Agency had marked the beginning of a new era for EU policy on maritime safety and protection of the marine environment.

The event provided an excellent opportunity to inform the public about the activites of the Agency, to thank those involved in its development to date and to celebrate the beginning of its long-term develpment in Lisbon.

Opening speeches by the guests of honour included i.a. speeches from José Sócrates, Portuguese Prime Minister, José Manuel Barroso, President of the European Commission, Jacques Barrot, Vice-President of the European Commision and Efthimios Mitropoulos, Secretary General of IMO.

Mitropoulos underlined the relationship between the two organisations and looked to EMSA to help with the implementation of IMO standards.  A copy of this speech can be found on the IMO website (Newsroom).

In his closing words, de Ruiter said that from its new location, EMSA will continue to develop its capabilities with the aim of making a significant contribution to improving the safety and environmental performance of shipping in and around EU waters.

INTERTANKO was represented at the ceremony by Kristian Fuglesang, Assistant Director – Europe and Sally Woulfe, Regional Manager for Portugal.
