Sports of the Seven Seas – seafarers’ soccer?

Although the World Cup has been dominating the media, we are happy to publicise the activities of a less well-known organisation.

For some years, a programme of sporting events has taken place between seafarers of all nations, who compete with their fellow seafarers – as and when time permits and with in-built flexibility commensurate with normal trading patterns. Sports include soccer, volleyball, table tennis and basketball.

Needless to say, organising such activities requires money and the administrators have approached the shipping industry to see if GBP 100,000 can be found to fund the organisation for the next 12 months.

This amount could be put up by one company or by ten, and the project can be backed by a company even if it does not necessarily have teams wishing to take part. If you cannot resist the urge for your seafarers to beat those of your competitors, this could be money well spent.
