INTERTANKO speaks at Tanker Outlook Conference, Singapore

As part of the busy agenda for Singapore’s Maritime Week INTERTANKO’s Regional Manager Asia Pacific, Tim Wilkins, gave a keynote address at a Tanker Outlook Conference at the Shangri La Hotel this week.

The tanker-specific conference was seen as an opportunity to discuss main trends in the tanker market alongside the key issues associated with tanker operation. Wilkins presented an overview of the key issues affecting tanker operators today, based largely on INTERTANKO’s extensive work programme. Wilkins stated that there were a number of key issues which need to be understood by those outside tanker operation, as they are having, and are going to have, through market trends and drivers, a great influence on the way tankers are operated and managed in the future.

INTERTANKO’s presentation encompassed a wide range of matters such as ship recycling, air emission requirements, the introduction of common structural rules, training and recruitment of seafarers, and future amendments to MARPOL Annex II. (Click here to view the presentation.)

Wilkins commented that “ensuring that those within the industry have a firm understanding of the myriad of issues now influencing the tanker sector will ensure the tanker sector has greater control over its future direction, especially in terms of impending safety, environmental and seafarer regulations and their possible influence on market trends”.

The Tanker Outlook conference was a parallel session held alongside a dry-cargo specific event in which INTERCARGO’s Secretary General, Roger Holt participated.
