INTERTANKO Chairman highlights the challenges facing tanker owners

Speaking at the World Shipping (China) Summit 2006, Shenzhen, 3 November 2006, INTERTANKO Chairman Stephen Van Dyck highlighted the need for owners to be pro-active in meeting the numerous challenges that they face.

In his presentation, "The Evolution of the World Oil Tanker Industry and its Key Challenges", (click here to view) he covered China’s accelerating oil usage, refinery expansion plans, oil import growth and the rapidly increasing tonne-mile crude movements to China.

While tanker owners should be proud of the very significant improvements in safety and environmental performance that have been achieved over the past decade, he said that they still face many challenges, ranging from the control of engine air emissions to finding effective solutions to ballast water management and the safe and responsible recycling of ships.

He stressed the critical need to establish global standards for the industry and, to the maximum extent possible, global rules and regulations, and to ensure support for a dynamic IMO. He said it is crucial that owners take the lead in addressing the issues before them and in recognising the need to respond with timely and effective measures when called upon.

Finally he outlined INTERTANKO’s Poseidon Challenge and the invitation to all parties in the Chain of Responsibility to demonstrate their commitment to continuous improvement.

In a related presentation, INTERCARGO Secretary General Roger Holt spoke of The New Rules & Regulations in Bulk Shipping from a Commercial Perspective, covering recent developments in international legislation and other rules and regulations affecting bulker owners. He also stressed the importance for dry bulk owners to recognise the opportunities that exist for them to empower their association representatives to engage actively on their behalf to develop realistic regulations and best-practice self-regulation.

During the summit COSCO as the primary hosts paid tribute to INTERTANKO and INTERCARGO for their continuing support of this annual event and for again being "Honorary Organisers".
