Houston - Poseidon Challenge Session

The second Poseidon Challenge Session day was held on Wednesday, 28 March with outstanding success.  The session started with an excellent presentation by NYK on the programmes they have put in place to ensure continuous improvement within their company.  This was followed by RADM Craig Bone of the U.S. Coast Guard, who praised INTERTANKO for initiating the Poseidon Challenge and demonstrating its leadership in the shipping industry.

The morning session continued with six brief presentations by organisations and companies that provided a status report on the commitments made at the first Poseidon Challenge session in Singapore a year ago.  Of particular note was the handing over by Philip Wood, Immediate Past President of the Federation of National Association of Ship Brokers and Agents (FONASBA), of the first edition of the publication of reception facilities located around the world, which was put together by FONASBA members in fulfilment of the commitment that the organisation made at the first Poseidon Challenge Day in Singapore last year.

The afternoon session was dedicated to those that had volunteered to make new commitments to continuous improvements in their sectors of the maritime industry.  This session included commitments from Bob Johnston of OSG, Peter Cremers of the Anglo-Eastern Group, Thomas Tay of the Singapore Officers Union, Thomas Kornegay of the Houston Port Authority and Don Toenshoff of Marine Spill Response Corp.  In addition to these commitments, a number of voluntary commitments were made from the floor by members of the audience and others providing verbal updates on commitments they had made in Singapore.  All presentations can be seen on the INTERTANKO web site.

In addition, Stephen Van Dyck, Chairman of the Poseidon Challenge, formally announced the establishment of the Poseidon Challenge Award, which has been created to recognise outstanding accomplishments in continuous improvement in maritime industry.  The first such award will be presented at the INTERTANKO 2008 Annual Tanker Event   The procedure for this award, which includes the eligibility and selection criteria and the process for submitting a nomination, will be posted on our website in due course.
