Overview of INTERTANKO strategy and Council decisions given at Singapore members lunch

At a members lunch in Singapore earlier this week hosted by INTERTANKO's Regional manager Tim Wilkins, the Association's Managing Director, Dr. Peter Swift, provided local members with an update on the decisions taken at last week's Council meeting in Houston.

It was a fitting presentation for the first lunch in Singapore of 2007, with a broad overview of the issues under discussion at the Council meeting, including the ship recycling interim strategy, activity related to the Association's new Human Element in Shipping Committee, the IACS Early Warning System, port reception facilities and the lifeboat safety initiative. Swift also touched on other association matters, including fleet and membership development and the ongoing discussion relating to the inclusion of best practices in the INTERTANKO membership criteria.

With INTERTANKO's Council having reaffirmed its position on the air emission strategy, it was also a good opportunity to update the members on the progress of this issue. This gave rise to a useful discussion on the current thinking on the use of distillates and in particular on the growing concern about the use of scrubbers as a long-term solution.
