INTERTANKO responds to ACP on the revised transit toll proposal

In response to concerns presented by the industry and separate companies at a Public Hearing in Panama on 14 March 2007, the ACP (Panama Canal Authority) Board of Directors has decided to postpone the implementation of the controversial revision of transit tariffs from 1 May to 1 July 2007, i.e. by two months, and to allow the industry a further 15 days for comments.

INTERTANKO expressed its concerns at the too sudden and too high tariff revision, both in the joint industry submission presented by the International Chamber of Shipping (ICS) as well as in its supplementary submission to the Public Hearing.

INTERTANKO and its industry partners clearly welcome this postponement of the increased tariffs but do not find a two-month deferment to be a satisfactory pre-warning. It therefore reiterates its concerns which have yet to be  addressed.
