Reduction of air emissions highlighted as key environmental challenge

The principal environmental challenges facing the shipping industry were high on the agenda at the Contemporary Issues Seminar arranged by the World Maritime University in Malmo, 3-4 September 2007.

 

Although the focus was principally on containerisation, many of the recent tends and current challenges were highlighted as being common for most of the shipping industry. With the rapid expansion in the size of the largest ships, new and expanded port facilities are being subjected to increasing local community scrutiny in terms of their environmental impact, and new engines are required to have greater efficiency and cleaner performance.

 

In his talk at the seminar, INTERTANKO's MD Dr. Peter Swift spoke generally of the key environmental challenges, but concentrated on the need to address air emissions from the standpoint of both reducing harmful air pollution and lowering greenhouse gas emissions.

 

He pointed out that while the international shipping industry has been concerned about unilateralism in terms of conflicts with international conventions and treaties on issues such as liability, compensation, security, criminalisation and tanker phase-out, there are growing local community, national and regional concerns on environmental issues which seriously challenge the ability to develop and implement global solutions. He cited air pollution, ballast water transport and biocidal anti-foulants as examples.

 

In his presentation Dr. Swift summarised the various local and regional pressures to reduce air emissions, and covered the rationale for INTERTANKO’s proposal for a wholesale switch to the use of distillate fuels. He also touched briefly on the many measures that are under active review within the shipping industry which could result in significant reductions in shipping’s carbon footprint.
