INTERTANKO's presentation to the Warsash Maritime Academy’s Post Graduate Certificate Students

A group of senior lecturers from Philippines' Maritime Education and Training Institutions attended a one-day seminar at the Chamber of Shipping in London last week, as part of their Post Graduate Certificate studies at the Warsash Maritime Academy. These institutions were The Philippine Merchant Marine Academy (PMMA); Maritime Academy of Asia and the Pacific (MAAP); Philippine Center for Advanced Maritime Simulation & Training (PHILCAMSAT); and FMFI Maritime Foundation Inc.

INTERTANKO's U.K. Regional Manager Minerva Alfonso’s presentation highlighted why the quality of human resources is key to the future success of the tanker shipping industry; the importance of ensuring high standards in the training of seafarers in the Philippines and elsewhere; as well as the need to maintain a regular dialogue with industry.

Alfonso discussed the role that the Association plays in providing leadership to the tanker industry in ensuring the safe, environmentally sound and efficient seaborne transportation of oil, gas and chemical products. She also outlined INTERTANKO’s initiatives in support of the recruitment, training and retention of sea staff; the Tanker Officer Training Standards (TOTS) system; as well as initiatives to support the welfare and well-being of ships' crews.

Finally, she discussed many of the best practices that are to be expected of educational institutions. These included having a recognised quality assurance system, working closely with industry, having competent lecturers qualified as course designers and trainers, providing courses with measurable objectives and realistic assessments, and course contents being verifiable against recognised industry / international standards.
