INTERTANKO’s Hellenic Forum meets in Athens

INTERTANKO’s Hellenic Forum met this week in Athens. Around sixty representatives from the Association’s Greek members were updated by INTERTANKO Managing Director Dr Peter Swift on a number of issues on the Council’s Agenda for its April meeting.

Swift also brought members up to date on the Revision of MARPOL Annex VI on Air Emissions from Ships and gave some background on emissions trading and the Association’s position. (Click here to view.)

The Forum discussed the enlargement of the Hellenic Forum into the Hellenic Mediterranean Panel and considered a first draft of new terms of reference.

Area Manager Bill Box updated members on the requirements for Long Range Identification and Tracking (LRIT) since SOLAS regulation V/19-1 on LRIT entered into force on 1 January 2008, and clarified this rather confused picture. (Click here to view.)

Ketil Djønne from ADS Insight, INTERTANKO’s consultant in Brussels, gave an update covering some recent developments in Brussels, including Criminalisation and the Ship Source Pollution Directive, the Third Maritime Safety Package, the Civil Liability Directive and Flag State Compliance. (Click here to view.)

INTERTANKO’s new Legal Counsel, Michele White,  introduced herself to local members and reminded them of the services offered by the Association’s Legal Section, including the Freight and Demurrage Information Pool, charterparty and documentary advice, charterparty clause construction, general legal advice.

The Forum was delighted to welcome eminent U.S. lawyer Michael Chalos (senior partner with New York law firm Chalos, O'Connor & Duffy) who has been instrumental in several high profile U.S. court cases on illegal discharges which have involved whistleblowing by crew members. Chalos gave a fascinating presentation to members about illegal discharges and developments in the U.S. He was joined for the busy question and answer session by Irwin Schwartz, a prominent Seattle attorney, who also specialises in these types of MARPOL violation cases.

All the above presentations can also be viewed on INTERTANKO's web site under Intertanko Presentations.
