Graduating students together with the faculty and staff of the J. B. Lacson Foundation Maritime University held a research colloquium this week with the theme JBLFMU's REAL Culture for Global Competitive Edge at the University's Hall in Iloilo Philippines.

INTERTANKO's Maritime Advisor, Minerva Alfonso, was invited as plenary speaker and she presented a paper "The Challenges of the Seafaring Profession Today: Shortage of Officers, Piracy in the Gulf of Aden and the Global Financial Crisis," which was followed by a very lively discussion and several interesting questions from the students and faculty, particularly with regard to the industry and INTERTANKO initiatives on piracy; the probable cause of the spike in tanker incidents in recent years; as well as INTERTANKO's Tanker Officer Training Standards (TOTS).
