Tokyo - Tanker Chartering Seminar held in Tokyo

This week saw the ever popular series of INTERTANKO Tanker Chartering Seminars continue in Tokyo in conjunction with the 2009 Tanker Event. The Seminar was chaired by INTERTANKO’s General Counsel, Michele White. The Seminar featured the following sessions:

1. Contract formation
2. New issues and recent cases in chartering
3. Time charters - last voyages
4. Rule B attachments
5. Safe ports

The presentations were followed by the regular lively mock arbitration session which, in view of its prominence, this year focussed on the chartering issues involved with piracy. This part of the Seminar in particular provided a thought-provoking debate over issues such as off-hire, delay, ransom, arming of ships, additional insurance and security measures, topped by introducing the delegates to the now well-received INTERTANKO Model Piracy Clauses. These clauses can be found here

Copies of the presentations can be found on the website at Intertanko Presentations.

Our sincere thanks go our speakers drawn from the Association's Documentary Committee: Professor Martin Davies, Tulane Law School; Bill Honan, Holland & Knight, New York; and Rajeev Philip, Steamship Mutual, London, also to all delegates for their active participation.
