Hellenic Mediterranean Panel reaches out to Mediterranean members

This week's meeting of INTERTANKO's Hellenic Mediterranean Panel in Athens was well attended and heard some good discussions on some of the issues preoccupying our Members right now.

Chaired by Dimitris Korkodilos of Andriaki Shipping, the Panel elected two new Vice Chairmen:

Harry Vafias of Stealth Maritime Corp in Athens and Derya Sabaz of Besiktas Shipping in Istanbul. Kostas Vlachos also remains as Vice Chairman.

Korkodilos commented that this is a positive move by this Panel to show that it now represents Members from the Mediterranean countries, and is another step in encouraging Members to be involved in INTERTANKO's business in their region.

The Panel welcomed three new Members:

Alison Management Corp

Chemnav Shipmanagement

LL Energy SA.

John Platsidakis from Angelicoussis Shipping group gave an update on the ongoing review by the Executive Committee of the operational framework of INTERTANKO and its organisation.

Tim Crouch, President of Advanced System Safety Management in Switzerland, addressed the Panel on whether bridge resource management has evolved to meet today's human challenges, including addressing the uncertainties, fears, inhibitions, misconceptions of those on the bridge.

The Panel was updated on progress that has been made in terms of the development of ballast water treatment systems by Area Manager and Panel Secretary Bill Box, who went on to cover the latest items of significance on greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions, including the outcome of COP 15 and its significance for shipping, an introduction to key items on the table at the IMO's MEPC 60 meeting (22-26 March). He then gave the Panel a summary of the Virtual Arrival initiative, on which INTERTANKO has been working with OCIMF as part of a proactive and practical response to the GHG situation.

Box also gave a brief run-down on the new Chinese Regulation on the Prevention and Control of Marine Pollution from Ships that took effect on 1 March this year.
