Shipping’s new era

INTERTANKO’s Managing Director, Dr Peter Swift, chaired a lively and stimulating Summit in Cyprus last week, where delegates discussed the legacies of the recession and some of their enduring effects on the maritime industries.

The assembled ship owners, ship managers, bankers, regulators and equipment suppliers stopped short of declaring new Kings of the Jungle but identified various attributes that they considered held the most potential for future success in the new world. These included:

  • those with an unswerving commitment to quality, be they owners, managers, flags suppliers or other;
  • those committed to maintaining training programmes;
  • companies with robust business strategies, with these tested against various planning scenarios.

Several suggested that size / volume would be more important in the future. The delegates also anticipated more outsourcing by owners and the likely emergence of new shipping banks, principally in Asia.
