Brazil implements ballast water convention

The IMO issued BWM.2/Circ.1 forwarding a communication from the Government of Brazil stating that, effective 15 October 2005, Brazil has implemented domestic legislation, based on the ballast water convention, requiring ships to carry out ballast water discharge and related measures.

This follows information received by INTERTANKO and previously published in the Weekly NEWS No. 42/2005 of 21 October 2005. While the Brazilian government claims to have implemented ballast water legislation in line with the IMO Convention, operators should be aware of the regional variations to the standard ballast water exchange requirements, and the extra ballast exchange required to reduce salinity when entering ports of the AmazonBasin.
