MEPC - South Africa Special Area

The MEPC agreed on the establishment of a MARPOL Special Area in the southern South African Sea. In addition to this, and owing to the fact that this will not enter into force until 1 March 2008, a special circular has been agreed upon which encourages industry to begin adopting practices consistent with the aims and objectives of designating this region as a Special Area on a voluntary basis. Particular emphasis was placed on the prevention of cargo tank washing by oil tankers, which has been mentioned specifically within the MEPC Circular.

A copy of the finalised delineation of the new Special area together with the final draft of the circular will be published in the Weekly NEWS when available from the IMO.
