OPRC-HNS Protocol enters into force June 2007

INTERTANKO welcomes the news that the OPRC-HNS Protocol 2000 (Protocol on Preparedness, Response and Co-operation to Pollution Incidents by Hazardous and Noxious Substances) will enter into force on June 14, 2007, following the accession by Portugal last week.

The Protocol will provide a global framework for international cooperation in combatting major incidents or threats of marine pollution from ships carrying chemicals or other hazardous and noxious substances. It follows the principles of the OPRC Convention covering oil pollution.

The equivalent instrument dealing with compensation, the HNS Convention, has not yet received sufficient signatures to enter into force.
