A study completed towards the end of last year by the Dutch company Haskoning Nederland BV has just been released to the general public and claims that the market for ballast water treatment technology, following the completion and entry into force of an IMO Convention, could be worth over 1 billion USD per annum.

Although based on a number of assumptions regarding the IMO’s Convention on ballast water, the study draws on a wide range of information to reach its conclusions. The study focuses on shipping industry trends and figures regarding fleet sizes coupled with the foreseen legislative developments which will encourage the technology developers to provide adequate solutions.

The focus is to encourage further investment into the technology required based on the strong evidence of a future market for the end product. In reaching its conclusion the study draws together some interesting figures on the potential cost of fitting ballast treatment technology on both new and existing ships.
