Environmental Challenge moving forward

Following the short listing of the entrants by the Environmental Committee at its last meeting in January, it is now up to the Panel of Judges to decide which out of the three challengers is deemed to have met the Challenge.

At its last meeting in January the Environmental Committee discussed at length the submissions that had been received in the three categories; oil in the sea, alien species and air emissions from shipping. Taking into account the Challenge aims and objectives the Committee decided that Teekay’s Ballast Water Exchange concept, Dr. Timothy Gunner’s VOCON Procedure and NEI Treatment Systems’ de-oxygenation ballast treatment design were up to the Challenge.

However, the trial continues. The three on the short list will now be forwarded to the Panel of Judges; Admiral Mitropoulos of the International Maritime Organization (IMO), Dr. Claude Martin of the World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF), Admiral T. H. Collins of the United States Coast Guard and Dr. Karl Laubstein from the World Maritime University. Details on the three short listed entries, together with the other entrants to the Challenge can be viewed on the INTERTANKO Environmental Challenge website

The award for meeting the Challenge will be presented at INTERTANKO’s Tanker Event in Dubai on 28 March 2004.
