Failure to ensure that ship's stores are accurately declared to customs could lead to prosecution and/or custody

Members are advised to ensure that a vessel's stores are accurately recorded and declared to customs when making a port call.

An incident at Novorossisk has been reported of a master who inadvertently omitted to declare some de-scaling liquid containing hydrochloric acid. He may face prosecution by the authorities with possible penalties being a substantial fine and/or imprisonment. The master in question is being held in custody pending the outcome of the investigation.
