The International Labour Organisation (ILO) has revised and updated its publication entitled: ‘Development of measures to reduce drug and alcohol problems in the maritime industry’, which was originally published in 1996. The new publication focuses attention on the programme planners through the promotion of awareness and education for seafarers on the problems related to drugs and alcohol in the maritime industry.

Distributed earlier this month at the IMO Standards of Training and Watchkeeping sub-Committee, the manual provides background and practical information necessary to develop, implement and evaluate comprehensive programmes. It is suggested that the document would be useful in the development of the drug and alcohol programme for inclusion in the Safety Management System.
