IMO REMINDER ON AMENDMENTS TO SOLAS

As reported in our article in Weekly NEWS No. 25 of 21 June 2002, a number of amendments to the International Convention for the Safety of Life at Sea (SOLAS Convention) came into effect on 1 July 2002.

IMO has recently posted a Reminder  regarding these various important changes.

Voyage Data Recorders (VDRs) are required on most new ships constructed on or after 1 July 2002. A study is underway to determine VDR requirements for existing ships. Automatic Identification Systems (AISs) are required on most new ships constructed on or after 1 July 2002. Carriage requirements for existing ships provide for a phase-in period extending through 1 July 2007, depending upon the size and type ship. Ships carrying an approved Electronic Chart Display and Information System (ECDIS) will be accepted as meeting the chart carriage requirements of SOLAS.
