IMO guidance for the expeditious disembarkation of persons rescued at sea

Following high profile diplomatic incidents involving rescues at sea in recent years, the IMO has adopted amendments to the International Convention for the Safety of Life at Sea (SOLAS), 1974, and the International Convention on Maritime Search and Rescue, 1979 (SAR).

These Maritime Safety Committee (MSC) resolutions entered into force on 1st July 2006 and set out the obligations of the master to render assistance and the complementary obligations of states to relieve the master of responsibilities to provide follow-up care for the survivors and deliver those rescued to a place of safety.

Working with the UN Refugee Agency (UNHCR), the IMO has produced a leaflet aimed at assisting owners and masters with guidance for the expeditious disembarkation of persons rescued at sea.

A limited number of copies of this leaflet are being sent by INTERTANKO to all members for distribution to ships. Additional copies may be obtained from the Secretariat upon request to any of the INTERTANKO offices.
