INTERTANKO and HELMEPA seek further cooperation

HELMEPA (the Hellenic Marine Environment Protection Agency) held its 22nd Annual General Meeting on 22 April 2004 in Piraeus. INTERTANKO gave a brief address regarding a plan for future cooperation with HELMEPA and the generation of further MEPAs around the world.

Chaired by Nikolas P. Tsakos, the meeting was well attended by its members in Greece, who were present to reflect on the past success of HELMEPA and consider the future direction for the forthcoming year. INTERTANKO attended the AGM as an Associate Member of HELMEPA and long-time supporter of the MEPA aims and objectives.

INTETANKO’s Environmental Manager Tim Wilkins addressed the meeting with a short intervention looking at possibilities for further cooperation between HELMEPA and INTERTANKO. This cooperation would focus on the establishment of MEPAs around the world as well as assistance and cooperation on environmental awareness for schools, colleges and seafarers.

Wilkins noted the two associations’ “overlapping objective for cleaner seas”, and that “HELMEPA and INTERTANKO can coordinate efforts to highlight the continuing need to protect and conserve the marine environment in a sustainable manner”.

Having received support from the HELMEPA members at the meeting and following a successful presentation by Dimitrios Mitsatsos, Director General of HELMEPA, at INTERTANKO’s AGM in Dubai, it is hoped that the two associations can now actively work together on their mutual objectives.
