INTERTANKO calls its first Human Element in Shipping Committee meeting

INTERTANKO is pleased to announce that the first meeting of INTERTANKO’s Human Element in Shipping Committee (HEiSC) will be held next week in London.

The Committee’s Terms of Reference were approved in November 2006 by INTERTANKO’s Council, enabling the Committee to start its work.

The human element in shipping is an extremely broad brief. Among the issues which the Committee will discuss initially are:

·          Officer retention

·          Competency and training

·          TOTS - Tanker Officer Training Scheme

·          ILO 180

·          Unfair treatment of seafarers

·          Difficulties with shore leave

·          Reasons for losing qualified seafarers

·          Requirements/need for cadets on ships

·          Fatigue

The first agenda of HEiSC may be accessed here. This will be made available on our website, together, in due course, with the Minutes of the meeting.

We all wish HEiSC the best of luck for the future!
