INTERTANKO follow-up on Argentine SOPEP Rules

As advised in Weekly NEWS No. 33 of 13 August 2004, INTERTANKO has been attempting to open a dialogue with the Prefectura Naval Argentina in an effort to rationalise the recently enforced national requirements for Ship Board Oil Pollution Emergency Response Plans (SOPEP).

In a fax sent to the Prefecture in August, INTERTANKO stressed the importance of maintaining the principle of international rules and requirements governing pollution prevention and compensation, while also expressing more specific concerns regarding the Argentine rules.

INTERTANKO has yet to receive a response and will continue to use contacts in order to raise its concerns with the authorities. Any further news on the development of this requirement from members trading in these waters would also be welcome.
