Inspection and maintenance of mooring rope tails

The INTERTANKO Vetting Committee has been engaged in lengthy correspondence over the age requirements for mooring rope tails in connection with some comments received by some oil companies about the age of such tails.

It was felt therefore that it was appropriate to remind members of the relevant recommendations that are contained within the OCIMF Mooring & Equipment Guidelines which state:

"Tails should be replaced at least every 18 months "UNLESS" experience and/or inspection indicates a longer or shorter period is warranted.”

In other words, owners should ensure that they have a suitable documented system in place to ensure that adequate inspection regimes are in effect.
