MEPC - Identification and protection of Special Areas and Particularly Sensitive Sea Areas

The move by Belgium, France, Ireland, Portugal, Spain and the UK to designate most North Western European waters as a PSSA succeeded, despite industry doubts over whether IMO principles and guidelines were followed in making this application. This could open the door to a string of similar requests from any country in the world, thereby devaluing the fundamental concept of a PSSA. At the last minute the proposing states withdrew their request to ban single-hulled tankers carrying heavy oils into the PSSA but would submit further restrictions in the future. INTERTANKO will maintain observations on any further submissions to other IMO committees on this matter.
