MSC 84 - AIS broadcasted cargo codes

The pre-2007 cargo categorisation in MARPOL Annex II categorised Noxious Liquid Substances (NLS) cargoes into A,B,C and D categories. After the adoption of resolution MEPC.118(52) , NLS cargoes are categorised in X,Y,Z and OS (Other Substances).

As many members already are aware, this has created a difficulty as the vast Automatic Identification Systems (AIS) equipment is not programmed to broadcast the new categorisation codes.

This anomaly was discussed by the IMO’s Maritime Safety Committee (MSC 84), and it was agreed that further consideration should be given by the Navigational Sub-committee.

Members will appreciate that the INTERTANKO Secretariat has discussed this anomaly with the Oil Companies International Marine Forum (OCIMF) in order to avoid any unnecessary observations under its Ship Inspection Report (SIRE) programme.
