MSC 84 - Amendments to SOLAS – correction to last week’s article

An error occurred in last week’s Weekly NEWS article, for which we apologise. We repeat the corrected article below:

The IMO's Maritime Safety Committee (MSC 84) has adopted a number of amendments to the SOLAS Convention. Among the amendments were:

Casualty Investigation Code:

This amendment makes it mandatory for administrations to carry out investigations in the event of a casualty or an incident.

Emergency towing arrangements for tankers:

This amendment requires emergency towing arrangements for tankers of NOT less than 20,000 dwt.

Tankers constructed on or after 1 July 2002 will be required to have an arrangement capable of rapid deployment in the absence of main power, at both ends of the ship. Tankers constructed before 1 July 2002 shall be fitted with an arrangement as per Resolution MSC.35(63) as amended. Both are to be approved by the relevant administration.

IMO guidelines has been developed to assist owners/operators in preparing ship-specific emergency towing procedures. These guidelines will be made available to members in due course.

These amendments will enter into force 1 January 2010.
