Measures to prevent accidents with lifeboats – IMO Circular MSC.1/Circ.1206

The new consolidated circular MSC.1/Circ.1206, adopted at MSC 81 contains guidelines to provide measures to prevent accidents related to drills and test procedures with lifeboats, and to ensure that drills and equipment are exercised and maintained in the safest possible way, and in accordance with manufacturer recommendations.

The Circular is right up to the minute, bearing in mind the new SOLAS amendments which enter into force 1 July 2006, see INTERTANKO Weekly News 21/2006.

The circular MSC.1/Circ.1206 will supersede the following circulars:

MSC/Circ.1049 – Specific procedures for maintenance and servicing.
MSC/Circ.1093 – Guidelines for periodic servicing and maintenance of lifeboats, launching appliances and on-load release gear.
MSC/Circ.1136 – Guidance on safety during abandon ship drills using lifeboats.
MSC/Circ.1137 – Guidelines for simulated launching of Free-Fall Lifeboats.
