Minimal bridge manning increases risk of marine casualties

The UK Marine Accident Investigation Branch (MAIB) has issued its Bridge Watchkeeping Safety Study.

The study concludes that minimal bridge manning leads to watchkeeper fatigue and increases the risk of marine casualties. The study also found that standards of lookout in general are poor and that the current provisions of STCW 95, in respect of safe manning, hours of work and lookout, are ineffective.
