New Australian Ballast Water Requirements

Effective from 1 July 2004, the Australian region of Victoria will impose its own ballast water requirements on national and international shipping coming from other ports within the country. This is above and beyond the current national requirements for Australia which regulate those vessels arriving from outside of Australian waters.

Vessels will have to undergo assessment with the ballast water decision support system (DSS), as per national requirements, and potentially be required to manage their ballast. Management includes the use of ballast water exchange and other approved techniques. In the latter case, any treatment option will have to be approved by the Victoria authorities prior to use.
