Panama Canal SOPEP

INTERTANKO has written to the Panama Canal Authority (PCA) to raise its concerns regarding the recent requirements for all vessels carrying more than 400 tons of oil to have a Panama canal SOPEP.

Although we have not received a formal response to this letter yet, we have since participated in a meeting with high ranking officials of the PCA in London where we repeated our concerns contained in the above mentioned letter. The PCA has intimated that it may be open to further discussion over easing the process, documentation and detailed requirements, although it was also made clear that some form of requirement will be implemented. INTERTANKO will continue the dialogue and keep members advised of developments.
