STW 39 - Revision of STCW begins at the IMO

The IMO's Sub-committee on Standards of Training and Watchkeeping (STW 39) met this week in London and began its work to revise the STCW Convention (International Convention on Standards of Training, Certification and Watchkeeping for Seafarers, 1978). The revision process will be the main focus for this Sub-committee over the next two years and it is anticipated that the revised STCW Convention will be adopted in 2010.

The discussions this week have focused on updating the Convention to contain inter alia provisions for security, new technology, fatigue management, bridge and engine resource management, introduction of electronical officers, abandoning celestial navigation, dangerous cargo endorsement. The preliminary draft text of the revised STCW Convention will be further discussed in September 2008 and in January 2009.
