Simplified Voyage Data Recorder (S-VDR) adopted by IMO

Following much detailed work undertaken over several years by INTERTANKO on Voyage Data Recorders (VDRs), and in particular subsequent to our efforts towards the creation of a Simplified Voyage Data Recorder (S-VDR) and in ensuring a waiving of the VDR requirement for ships that were to be phased out under 13G, we are pleased to advise that the IMO has adopted the proposed changes to SOLAS 1974 Regulation 20 as follows:

Regulation 20 VDR - a new paragraph has been inserted in this regulation as follows:

2. to assist in casualty investigations, cargo ships when engaged on international voyages shall be fitted with a VDR which may be a Simplified VDR (S-VDR) as follows:

.1  in the case of cargo ships of 20,000 GT and upwards constructed before 1/7/2002 at the 1st scheduled dry-dock after 1/7/2006 but not later than 1/7/2009

.2  in the case of cargo ships of 3,000GT and upwards but less than 20,000GT constructed before 1/7/2002 at the 1st scheduled drydock after 1/7/2007 but not later than 1/7/2010

.3  administrations may exempt cargo ships from the applications of the requirements of sub-paragraphs .1 and .2 when such ships will be taken permanently out of service within two years after the implementation specified in subparagraphs .1 and .2
